Official Ford Field Bag Policy Overview
The Detroit Lions have implemented the NFL’s bag policy at Ford Field to provide a safer environment and speed up stadium entry. Fans are strongly encouraged not to bring bags at all, but if they do, only specific styles and sizes are permitted at stadium plaza areas, gates, and queue lines under the official ford field bag policy:
Clear plastic, vinyl, or PVC bags not exceeding 12″ × 6″ × 12″ (official Lions logo clear totes are sold through club merchandise outlets and nflshop.com); a one-gallon clear plastic freezer bag; or a small clutch bag approximately the size of a hand (max 4.5″ × 6.5″), with or without a handle or strap, which can be carried alongside one of the clear bag options.
Medically necessary items and medical equipment are also permitted after inspection at designated security lanes.
What Makes the Ford Field Policy Different?
Ford Field follows the standard NFL clear bag format closely, but the diaper bag rule stands out. Many NFL and MLB venues explicitly list diaper bags as an approved exception; Ford Field does not. Instead, its prohibited items documentation groups diaper bags with other banned bag types, meaning parents need to carry infant essentials inside an approved clear tote under the ford field clear bag policy rather than expecting a separate diaper bag allowance. This is critical to know well before you arrive if you’re traveling with a baby.
The other detail worth noting is that Ford Field offers no official bag check or storage locker facility on site. Any non-compliant bag must be returned to your vehicle or hotel before entering.

Clear Plastic, Vinyl, or PVC Bags
The primary approved bag type is a clear plastic, vinyl, or PVC tote capped at 12″ × 6″ × 12″. Official Detroit Lions and NFL logo clear totes sold through club merchandise shops or nflshop.com are pre-approved at this size.
One-Gallon Clear Freezer Bags
A standard 1-gallon clear plastic freezer bag (such as a Ziploc) is accepted as a reliable, inexpensive alternative to a clear tote under the ford field clear bag policy.
Small Clutch Purses or Cases
A small clutch or wristlet approximately hand-sized, no larger than 4.5″ × 6.5″, is permitted with or without a handle or strap. It can be carried on its own or alongside an approved clear bag.
Medically Necessary Items
Medical items and equipment are allowed after proper inspection at security gates, separate from the standard bag size limits.
Infant Supplies and Diaper Rules
Because traditional diaper bags are prohibited, parents should pack diapers, wipes, formula, and baby essentials inside an approved 12″ × 6″ × 12″ clear tote bag or a one-gallon freezer bag.
Prohibited Bags and Items Under Ford Field Rules
Review the comprehensive list of ford field prohibited items and banned bags before arriving at the gates:
- Backpacks: All backpacks, including clear backpacks and drawstring bags
- Diaper Bags: Standalone diaper bags (infant supplies must go in clear bags)
- Oversized Purses: Non-clear purses or bags exceeding 4.5″ × 6.5″
- Fanny Packs & Cinch Bags: Belt bags, fanny packs, and string sacks
- Work & Tech Cases: Briefcases, computer bags, and laptop cases
- Luggage & Duffels: Duffel bags, gym bags, and rolling suitcases
- Coolers: Hard or soft-sided coolers of any size
- Containers: Cans, bottles, glass, thermoses, and outside beverages
- Weapons: Firearms, knives, pepper spray, and weapons of any kind
- Large Umbrellas: Large golf umbrellas or umbrellas with pointed tips
- Laser Pointers & Noisemakers: Air horns, whistles, fireworks, and lasers
How Security Screening Works at Ford Field
Bags are inspected against the approved list as fans approach stadium plaza areas, entry gates, and queue lines under the ford field bag policy. Security staff will verify that clear totes do not exceed 12″ × 6″ × 12″ and that non-clear clutches fit within the 4.5″ × 6.5″ limit. If you’re carrying medically necessary items or equipment, these undergo inspection separately from general admission lines.
Because diaper bags specifically aren’t permitted as standalone items, pack all infant essentials into a compliant clear tote before arriving to avoid being turned away at gate inspection.
Packing Strategy for Faster Entry
- Choose an approved clear tote: Default to a 12″ × 6″ × 12″ clear bag or a one-gallon freezer bag as your main gameday carry.
- Carry a clutch for essentials: If you’d rather not carry a clear tote, opt for a small clutch within 4.5″ × 6.5″ instead.
- Pack baby items in clear plastic: Pack diapering essentials into your approved clear tote rather than a separate diaper bag.
- Leave prohibited bags at home: Skip backpacks, computer cases, duffels, and fanny packs entirely — none qualify regardless of size.
- Buy an official team tote: Purchase an official Detroit Lions clear tote from the team store if you need a guaranteed compliant bag.
- Allow extra time for medical gear: If carrying medical equipment, prepare for a separate manual check at entry gates.
Security Check Anxiety Tips
A clear bag speeds up the gate check significantly since security personnel can see contents without manual searching. Hold your clear bag open as you approach the gate, have your mobile ticket displayed in the Lions Mobile App, and if you have medical items requiring separate inspection, arrive 30 minutes earlier to ensure a smooth, unhurried entry experience.
Day-of Entry Tips From BagPolicyInfo
- Don’t assume diaper bags are exempt: Unlike many stadiums, Ford Field does not allow standalone diaper bags.
- Official logo totes are a safe bet: Lions-branded clear bags sold through NFL shop are pre-approved at the standard size limit.
- Clutch and clear tote combo allowed: You can carry one small clutch (4.5″ × 6.5″) in addition to your 12″ × 6″ × 12″ clear tote.
- No on-site storage lockers: There are no bag lockers at Ford Field gates, so leave unapproved bags in your vehicle or hotel.
- Go bag-free if possible: Ford Field strongly encourages attending without bags for the fastest possible stadium entry.
Category-Specific Packing Tips
For Lions game regulars: A clear tote within 12″ × 6″ × 12″ gives you maximum space for cold-weather layers, gloves, and gameday gear.
For concertgoers: A small clutch within 4.5″ × 6.5″ is the easiest hands-free option for phones, cards, and lip balm.
For families with infants: Pack baby formula, wipes, and diapers in a compliant clear tote to ensure admission at gate security.
For guests with medical needs: Bring required medical equipment directly to security lanes, where staff will conduct a manual inspection.
Before You Go Checklist
